Rock, Rock, Rockaway Beach

The Ramones may have hitched a ride, but you don’t have to!

The spit of land known as Far Rockaway is a residential beach community within Queens, one of New York City’s five boroughs.  Connected to the other boroughs by car bus, subway and ferry, all it it takes is a MetroCard swipe to visit the miles of beach available at several public access point. Here’s a link to the NYC Parks information page about Rockaway.

Best of all, this access is free- unlike the discriminatory $15 per adult that must be paid to enter Long Beach, just down the shore in Nassau County, Long Island.  I understand paying for parking, but paying to put my feet on sand- no way!

Needless to say, Rockaway Beaches get crowded. However, there’s no amusement parks or large concert venues to add to the chaos like at Coney Island. Go early or late in the day,  walk a few blocks up or down the boardwalk and you can find peaceful spots to sunbathe, swim, learn to surf, fly a kite, ride a bike, get a bite, enjoy a beer…you get the picture!
