Chinese New Year in the City

New York City contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia, totaling 682,265 individuals, per the 2010 United States Census

I’ve recently heard that this number may now be almost 800,000.   That would be rougly 1 in 10 New York City residents!  So it is no surprise that Chinese New Year is something that we New Yorkers celebrate.

There are multiple parades every year, even though the weather is typically  frigid. There are special tasting menus too, plenty of red envelopes, citrus and money plants for sale in stores. Many people wear red as well.

Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square in Manhattan partnered with the Museum of the Chinese in America MoCA in 2019 for the display below.


20190204_145233The pig is said to be chubby and prosperous and the element for the 2019 year of the pig is Earth, which hopefully will bring more peace than last year’s fire.
